One of the biggest expenses to  small business owners are their marketing budgets, which puts them first in line when cost cutting measures are needed .  Unfortunately, with no marketing budget sales often plummet, perpetuating the sequence.  One way to dream big even when times are tough is to take advantage of joint venture opportunities.

A joint venture is a strategic alliance between two or more business people to contribute to a common commercial enterprise.  Put into English, this means the opportunity to pool resources so that everyone benefits.  Many joint ventures are as simple as cross promoting each other’s products, but the concept works equally well on a complicated collaboration such as a consolidated weekend event.

Whether simple or complicated, there are benefits to all who participate in joint venture marketing. First, is your chance to create more power from your marketing budget.  As an example, maybe your budget only allows for print media advertising, but by consolidating several business owner’s resources you will be able to expand into radio or even television advertising.  And every member of the joint venture has contacts and customers that can benefit the other members, expanding everyone’s sales force.

New business owners really benefit from choosing the right strategic business partners because they can establish their credibility very rapidly.  You really are perceived to be like those you hang around, so choosing successful partners will give you credibility as well.   Not to mention that successful business owners are so for a reason, and by learning from them as you go you will avoid a lot of the mistakes others make along the way.

The best part about joint ventures is that by joining forces you are able to dream big.  Nothing you want to do is out of your reach if you can find the right partners.  Small businesses are thriving through joint venture marketing, even during these tough economic times.  Yours can too with your commitment to finding the best joint venture partners for your goals.

Advertising Tips Small Businesses

When I was twenty-three, I had what I believed was a good business idea. I was going to sell pet insurance as I knew a contact in the industry.

At the same time I would also attempt to make money via offering a fostering service to the people that I knew.

By reading a number of books on marketing for small businesses and by asking a good friend of mine who has a business which is to do with selling external doors, I managed to find some potential routes which could help me to get started.

Direct marketing

This happened to be the first area that I tried. I had a small leaflet produced which explained the speech coaching service that I was offering and then with the help of some friends and family, went around my local area delivering them. This was not as successful as I hoped it would be, however I am sure that this area of marketing could work well for other types of business.

Newspapers

I then decided to speculate to accumulate. I contacted a number of the local newspapers in my area and paid for an advertisment which would appear on a weekly basis. This advert would reach quite a large number of people and even though this was quite an expensive form of marketing, it did work for me in the early days.

Open days

I wanted to expand the area that I was going to offer my services. I decided to hold an open day or presentation in various parts of the country which would help to promote my business.

I was actually quite surprised just how well this worked. The newspapers were virtually biting my hand off for the story, as it was something different that some of their readers were likely to find of interest. It was, of course, also an event that was to held locally to them.

Yellow pages

For around three years I advertised in the telephone directory Yellow Pages. For the first couple of years their adverts really did work for me but in the end the prices were just high in comparison to the amount of business it generated. The majority of people in the United Kingdom now have access to the web and for me this is very much the future; there will even be “internet houses” within a few years. Yellow pages or as it is now called Yell, has become more expensive when in reality probably less people are using it.

Advertising in the yellow pages did prove successful for me for a number of years however, and is certainly an area of marketing which could work for other small businesses.

Websites

I paid a company to design and build me a website around seven years ago and this has by far been the best marketing investment I have made thus far. I have worked hard to promote this site and it is now doing well in the major search engines.

Radio and television marketing

This is an area of marketing which I have not tried as yet as it is very expensive. That being said I have read reports about just how beneficial radio and TV adverts can be for a business.

I am sure there are many other ways of marketing a small business and I will seek them out in the future for my own business.

The above ideas are what I have learnt about and as you may have read, I have tried some of them myself with mixed success. Every business is obviously different and it is basically a form of trial and error to find which ones will work.

The Benefits Of Having Your Own Business

The unemployment rates in Western countries are going through the roof with companies laying off staff as they struggle to cope with the current financial turmoil. Losing your job or being made redundant is rarely a happy event however when it becomes a reality there is only one way that we should be thinking; in a positive manner. I know that this is easier said than done however feeling sorry for ourselves will not help the situation.

I was made redundant from a financial services corporation when I was aged twenty-two. Due to my age I was not in reality too bothered about the whole situation. I decided to think positively about the situation; in reality I did not even like the job that I was in, I found it rather boring. It has always been my goal to run my own business and this was a great opportunity for me to do this. Being made redundant turned out to be a blessing in disguise; I would probably have left the company within a few months in any case but this way they were actually paying me a redundancy package to leave!

I used this money to set up my own small business. I was going to run one-to-one stuttering therapy courses to help people to achieve fluency. I am a person who has managed to successfully overcome a stutter and I therefore felt that I had something to offer.

Working from home has many benefits as I have found to my own benefit. These include being your own boss and therefore not having to answer to other people. Choosing your own hours, choosing the amount of hours you work and the amount of holidays that you have. The rigid structure of set hours or working shifts no longer have to be an issue. The time spent travelling to work, normally in a rush hour period, is basically time that could be better spent. I am a person who prefers to work late at night and at times early in the morning when the world is seemingly at its quitest.

What I love the most about working from home is the ability to now attend all of the important days/events in my children’s lives. For example attending their school sports days, the christmas play, parents evenings, the visits to the dentists. A full time employee normally has to miss a number of these events which is most frustrating and also unacceptable.

I now have partnerships in other business ventures including one offering affordable front doors from a leading composite door company and one offering cheap hotel deals.

I would recommend other people to set up their own small business and to work from home, you need to be self-disciplined but the benefits are huge.

Starting a business is rewarding and exciting. Unfortunately, roughly 50% of new businesses fail within 5 years~their initial 5 years}. They fail to suceed as a result of a variety of reasons, such as low demand for products and services, poor location, and insufficient funding}.

It {doesn’t have to be like this though~However, this can be avoided}. As a result of thorough planning, a small business can suceed for years to come. Numerous factors must be considered for this to happen. For example, where will funding come from? Is there a solid business plan? How marketable is the product or service?

One of the biggest challenges facing you is finding sources of funding to get yourself started. Of the financing options available, you might try to fund your new enterprise with financial assistance from business partners, family or friends. Alternatively, you may require a small business loan. Each of these should be researched and valued to determine which is best economically. Be patient because the first offers you receive may not be suitable, and be persistent because you may find yourself rejected several times.~}

If you can overcome the issue of funding, the next thing to do is to analyse yourself. Thriving entrepreneurs are creative problem-solvers~Entrepreneurs who succeed generally have similar personality traits}. They are {intelligent, questioning, confident, and enjoy tackling challenges on a daily basis~They relish tackling challenges on a day to day basis and are questioning and confident}. Do you have it in you to start and run a small business? You should {sit down and consider the following~Ask yourself at least these questions}:

Are you {a motivated self-starter? ~}Do you have a strong drive for success? Are you balanced emotionally? Can you devote yourself to the business full-time? Are you a follower or a leader? Are planning and organizing strong points of yours?

If you’re at all concerned about your ability to build a business from nothing, consider opting for franchise ownership rather than setting up your own small business. Franchising is a business model in which various business aspects have already been established, such as branding, marketing and customer base.

I have to admit that I was not particularly enjoying the role that I was in. I had always wanted to be my own boss and this would be the perfect time to turn my dream into a reality.
